After Max Klein (Jeff Bridges) survives a major airline crash, his life changes dramatically. He begins to feel invincible, as though he were immortal. Suddenly, nothing is as it seems. He can no longer relate to his wife, Laura (Isabella Rossellini), nor the life he once lived. Seeking psychological help to assist with the coping of the crash, Max finds that even his doctor, Bill Purlman (John Turturro) can't even help. In a last ditch attempt to shake some sense into Max, Dr. Purlman has his client meet Carla (Rosie Perez), another survivor of the accident. Like Max, Carla's life has changed significantly. But unlike Max, Carla's spirit is destroyed. Her baby has been killed in the crash and she is left empty and alone. Now Max must put aside his own "fearless" attitude and come to grips with reality.
