Airdate: 10/31/10 Economists say that the great recession ended in June 2009, but it clearly still has Newton, Iowa, in its grip. The town lost 5,000 jobs when the Maytag factory moved out, and since then, one by one, local businesses are scaling back and shutting down. As residents face the midterm elections, unemployment is high and voters are angry. Scott Pelley heads to the heartland to speak with the voters of Newton. |
