Over the course of six parts, a documentary narrator (Samuel West) tackles the large question of why people participated in the Holocaust. Interviews with Nazi soldiers at concentration camps and others who viewed or participated in brutal executions of Jews agree to explain their reasoning. Most participants from those days of helping Hitler rise to power are now aged and facing death, but they express their actions without much remorse. Also using archival footage of Chamberlain (Neville Chamberlain), Goebbels (Josef Goebbels), and Speer (Albert Speer), the accounts of chilling atrocity mount without regret that they were executing Communists who happened to be Jews. Without drawing conclusions for the viewer, the array of interviews answers the question of how Germans could have supported Hitler and carried out his genocidal policy. |

Asks why, despite a growing awareness of the repression and atrocities of the Nazi regime and a realisation of impending military defeat, the German people were not able to rid themselves of Adolf Hitler and were left fighting to the end. Even in the midst of set backs Hitler was able to inspire a fatalistic loyalty in his people and army that prolonged the Second World War. In addition, fear of the advancing Soviet army and the reprisals they would exact on the German people kept the nation fighting until the finale of the Battle of Berlin.
