“Secretariat” is the story about Penny Chenery (Diane Lane). Penny is a housewife and mother who has just lost her father, Chris Chenery (Scott Glenn) to a deliberating illness. She agrees to then take over her father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables. Although Penny knows nothing about race horses she is determined to learn. With the help of Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich) a famed veteran horse trainer, Penny overcomes adversity in a business stacked against her. Through the mudslinging and the attempts on her stables, Penny and Lucien take an underdog horse and together foster the first Triple Crown winner in over twenty years.
